Located in the Bella Coola Valley on the edge of the Great Bear Rainforest, this historic lodge is a classic Canadian wilderness lodge set on 60 acres of private land nestled within the Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, the largest protected park in British Columbia. The lodge borders the Atanarko and Bella Coola rivers, and in the autumn grizzly bears come down to feast on the spawning salmon. The lodge is ideally located in a region with one of the healthiest bear habitats in the world and often the bears can be seen wandering past the lodge.

The lodge is well known for its warm, family style environment where guests can relax in the great lounge in front of one of the two huge fireplaces, leather sofas and piano. There are 11 chalets and cabins in total, most of which have queen beds and log burning stoves. The cabins range from the simple ‘fisherman’s cottages’ to the more luxuriously finished chalets that have wonderful views and a really homely feel to them. All guests can make use of the new spa facility (treatments must be booked in advance) and soak in the outdoor hot tub after a big day of Bella Coola adventures. Then retire to the lodge deck to sip a drink before dinner, where you can peacefully enjoy glimpses of the wildlife and breathtaking mountain views of the 8,000 foot rock peak aptly named Mount Stupendous.

Day 1 Vancouver to Bella Coola
Depart Vancouver South Terminal on Pacific Coastal Airlines scheduled morning flight to Bella Coola. At the airport you will be met by Tweedsmuir Park Lodge staff who will transfer you the 45 minutes to the lodge. After check-in, your stay will start with a delicious lunch followed by an orientation and bear awareness talk. Your bear viewing commences with a late afternoon River Drift down the Atnarko River. Relax and enjoy the amazing mountain scenery and keep your eyes open for wildlife! The salmon are spawning and provide an easy meal for majestic bald eagles and impressive grizzly bears. River otters and black bears may also be seen. (Lunch & dinner is included today)
Day 2 Wildlife Viewing
Wake up early and wander down to our Wildlife Viewing Station, which is for the exclusive use. Early morning is a great time to spot bears and the raised structure provides open lines of sight both up and down the river. After breakfast it’s time to head out for a Guided Nature Walk in the old growth forests of Tweedsmuir Park, the largest provincial park in British Columbia. Your guide, a naturalist, will show you how to track the bears and will point out various bear signs, including rub trees with claw and bite marks, and places the bears dig out in the forest floor for their naps called day beds. A picnic lunch will be served in the field. In the afternoon, continue exploring Tweedsmuir Park with a drive on the Tote Road past old, abandoned homesteads brimming with character. At the end of the road there is a short, highly recommended hike to Stillwater Lake. This is a beautiful, pristine place that should not be missed! (Breakfast, lunch & dinner is included today)
Day 3 Wildlife Viewing
Again this morning check out the Wildlife Viewing Station before breakfast. Then it’s time hit the river with your guide for a morning drift on the Atnarko River in search of more bears! The bears are most active in the morning and evening and it’s a great time to enjoy a quiet float. A nutritious lunch will be served at the lodge before you head off with your guide to further explore Tweedsmuir Park. (Breakfast, lunch & dinner is included today)
Day 4 Bella Coola to Vancouver
Departure day! We recommend one last visit to the Wildlife Viewing Station before breakfast. Lodge staff will transfer you back to the Airport for a mid-morning flight back to Vancouver arriving midday. (Breakfast is included today)
