Green Mountain National Forest is a national forest located in Vermont, a temperate broadleaf and mixed forest typical of the New England/Acadian forests ecoregion. The forest supports a variety of wildlife, including beaver, moose, coyote, black bear, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and ruffed grouse.

Mount Equinox Skyline Drive
Historic Route 7A between Manchester and Arlington, Vermont, Skyline Drive — the longest privately owned, paved toll road in the United States — ascends 3,248 feet over 5.2 miles to the top of Mount Equinox. In continuous operation since its completion in 1947, it is one of the safest, best engineered, well constructed toll roads in the country. There are several vistas and picnic areas along the Drive, which winds upward through four distinct forest types.
The 3,848-foot summit of Mount Equinox is enveloped in a nearly-perpetual breeze that has been described as “nature’s white noise”. The Green Mountains, The Valley of Vermont and the White Mountains of New Hampshire may be seen to the east. The Adirondack Mountains of New York provide the backdrop to the west, and the Taconic and Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts to the south. At the summit of Mount Equinox is the Saint Bruno Scenic Viewing Center, a gift from the Order of Carthusians to the people of Vermont and all visitors.

Fat Biking
When conditions are right, fat biking on the Nordic Center’s ski trails can be wonderfully invigorating. Whether you’re zooming downhill or taking time to appreciate the trails winding through a Wildlife Conservation Area, there is something for everyone. As with cross-country skiing, fat biking is an aerobic sport - dress in layers and be ready to shed a layer once you warm up on our numerous uphill climbs. Gloves are a must, as the descents bring on windchill.

Hildene Home
Robert and Mary Lincoln built Hildene as a summer home at the turn of the 20th century. Robert was the only child of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln to survive to maturity. Robert first visited Manchester as a young man in the summer of 1864 when he came to the Equinox Hotel with his mother and his brother Tad. Some forty years later he returned to purchase nearly 412 acres of land to build what he would call his ancestral home.
The 412 acre estate with its Georgian revival mansion and 14 historic buildings includes the home, formal garden and observatory; Welcome Center and The Museum Store in the historic carriage barn; 1903 Pullman car, Sunbeam; a solar powered goat dairy and cheese-making facility. The lower portion, the Dene, was recently incorporated into the guest experience. This land functions as a campus for environmental and agricultural education for high school students and includes a teaching greenhouse, composting facility, vegetable gardens, apple orchard, and 600 foot floating wetland boardwalk. Nearby, the 1832 schoolhouse, still used for education programs, stands in contrast to the new facilities. The agricultural project in the Dene embodies Hildene’s deep commitment to conservation, stewardship, sustainability and education and to its mission, Values into Action.
