Day 7 - Glacier Viewing (Stikine Icecap), Alaska
Navigate through an icy fjord—passing soaring cliffs, surging waterfalls and wild animals—during a voyage to one of the majestic glaciers along the Stikine Icecap.
Renowned for its iconic granite spires and imposing peaks, Alaska’s southernmost icefield is one of the 3 biggest icecaps in the state. Straddling the Alaska-British Columbia boundary, the Stikine Icecap boasts an abundance of glaciers and serves as a primary source for the Taku River and the Stikine River. Stand in awe at this spectacular icefield and be on the lookout for the process known as calving, where giant chunks of ice break off and spill into the sea below without warning. In addition to its geological wonders, the Stikine Icecap is home to numerous wildlife including bald eagles, brown bears, goats and whales. A nature lovers' paradise to be sure, the majesty of the area provides ample opportunity for even more photography.
Day 8 - Skagway
Discover this charming area that served as the setting of Jack London's book, The Call of the Wild. This magical place is located on the south coast of the state, near the north end of the Lynn Canal, in the Alaskan Panhandle.
A plethora of magnificent, albeit quaint, landmark buildings line the main thoroughfare in town. Broadway Street illustrates what life was like during Skagway's heyday—when opportunity and riches were as easy to find as the gold that brought treasure-seekers from near and far. While walking along this historic 7-block stretch, don't be surprised if you bump into residents wearing late 19th-century attire from the time when the town came into prominence.
Originally home to the Chilkoots and Chilkats Native Americans, Skagway came to prominence in 1896 when gold was discovered approximately 600 miles along the Klondike River. This event catalyzed what would be known as the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s. During this time, hundreds of thousands of gold prospectors settled into the area in search of fortune. The town grew both in size and structure during this economic boom, but by 1899, gold rush fever had passed. Modern-day Skagway holds approximately 800 residents and embraces its place in American history. Visitors continue to frequent this area to appreciate its distinct charm and sweeping mountain and river views.

Day 9 - Juneau
Learn about Alaska’s state capital, located along the Gastineau Channel. Nestled at the base of Mount Juneau amid a rainforest, Juneau is the largest capital in area (it’s larger than all of Delaware!) in the United States, and the only state capital accessible by air or ship only. Bordered by Canada to the east, Juneau is the only U.S. state capital located on an international border.
Enjoy recreational activities include hiking, kayaking, fishing, skiing, whale watching and wildlife viewing. Wilderness lovers will fall in love with this pristine destination. Witnessing a brown bear fishing for food or a bald eagle casually soaring overhead, is not out of the ordinary in Juneau.
Originally a fishing outpost for local Tlingit Native Americans, Juneau was founded in 1880 after 2 prospectors—Richard Harris and Joseph Juneau—discovered gold in the region, thanks to help by Chief Kowee of the Auk Tlingit Tribe. Shortly thereafter, the town, originally called Harrisburg, was struck with "gold fever" and began to flourish, followed by hard-rock mining, sawmilling, canning and an expanding fishing industry. Juneau became the capital of Alaska in 1906. Today, Juneau remains a treasured tourist destination that includes not only a Tlingit Native American influence, but also a tradition steeped in Russian culture. Boasting timeless natural wonders, museums and the historic sites, Juneau continues to stir the imaginations of all who visit.

Day 10 - Ketchikan
Learn more about the 5th most populous city in Alaska, billed as the "Salmon Capital of the World." Approximately 7,800 residents call this place in southeast Alaska home. Located on Revillagigedo Island along Tongass Narrows at the foot of the towering Deer Mountain, the city is named after Ketchikan Creek, which flows through the town.
Evidence of the city’s pride in its native roots is felt in the pervasive cultural influences that seem to colour the entire region. Major attractions boast towering totem poles, celebrating the various tribes indigenous to the area, while shops of every size offer one-of-a-kind, hand-carved items for tourists. Ketchikan has an economy that is—and always has been—centered on fishing. The waters surrounding the town teem with 5 types of salmon: king, red, silver, pink and chum—making it a destination of choice for professional and amateur fishermen the world over.
Ketchikan's humble beginnings started when a salmon saltery was established in 1883. In 1885, 160 acres of land were purchased from local Native Americans and—a year later—the first salmon cannery was built at the mouth of the Ketchikan Creek. By 1900, the fishing trade was flourishing and the town was officially founded. Ketchikan, already successful from industrial fishing, soon branched out and became a valuable mining supply centre due to the discovery of gold and copper in the region, followed by a flourishing logging industry that continued throughout the 20th century. Today, Ketchikan remains a treasured tourist destination where some of the world's most awe-inspiring natural wonders share centre stage with an intriguing and inspiring Native Alaskan culture.
