Fort Adams Tour

The best way to experience Fort Adams is participating on a traditional 75-minute guided tour that will provide you with an overview of the history, design, and restoration of Fort Adams. Your tour guide will take you from the top of the Forts walls to the depth of the underground tunnels. On the tour participants will sample the Quarters where officers and their families lived, both restored and un-restored areas and learn about the Trusts past and future plans for restoration, explore some of the most complex land defenses in the United States, delve beneath the walls of the Fort into underground tunnels. Experience over 190 years of American history, military culture, architecture & engineering.

Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival

Honoring the “Harvest of the Sea,” the Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival offers fresh, local seafood. Fish tacos, lobster rolls, stuffies, chowder, fried calamari, clams, oysters, signature cocktails and cold beer accompany continuous live music, and family fun, all beneath the Wharf’s colorful tents. Other neighboring restaurants and fisherman’s associations serve up their most celebrated seafood dishes as well as a few dishes for landlubbers and kids. Frozen lemonade, donuts, and kettle corn for your sweet tooth. Cafe-style seating is set up throughout the Wharf and proceeds from festival bars benefit Oliver Hazard Perry, RI’s 200-foot official sailing education vessel.

As you savor some delectable dishes, relax and enjoy the beats from area musicians. Live folk, surf rock, Caribbean and blues music are just a taste of what you’ll hear. Bring your dancing shoes because these bands promise to get your feet moving!

Rough Point Museum

Rough Point Museum was the Newport home of heiress, collector, and philanthropist Doris Duke (1912-1993). Experience Doris Duke’s life and legacy through the arrangements of the rooms, the fine and decorative arts and fashion collections, and a historic landscape with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Friendly and knowledgeable staff will be on hand to chat with visitors about the history of the museum, the collections and to answer visitor questions.

Touro Synagogue

As America’s oldest extant synagogue and a National Historic Site, Touro Synagogue is not only an active house of worship, but also a monument to Newport’s role in developing the American ideals of religious freedom, tolerance, and separation of church and state. George Washington’s famous 1790 letter to the Hebrew Congregation of Newport remains a cherished statement of these ideals and a reminder of Newport’s contribution to a promising young nation.

Groups visiting Touro Synagogue enjoy a 30-minute presentation given by an experienced and knowledgeable guide on the synagogue’s history, the George Washington letter, and the Colonial-era features of the beautiful sanctuary. The visit also includes two floors of interactive exhibits in our Visitors Center, on Touro Synagogue history, Newport’s colonial Jewish residents, and how Newport’s colonial community laid the groundwork for America’s First Amendment rights.

Museum of Newport History

Located in the 1762 Brick Market designed by Peter Harrison, our award-winning Museum is the perfect place to begin a visit to Newport. The Museum provides the whole family with an engaging introduction to the area’s rich history and the beauty of its architecture. Glimpse the lives of the people–past and present–who have made Newport one of America’s most historic cities.

Cliff Walk

The Cliff Walk along the eastern shore of Newport, RI is world famous as a public access walk that combines the natural beauty of the Newport shoreline with the architectural history of Newport's gilded age. Wildflowers, birds, geology ... all add to this delightful walk. Parts of the southern half of the walk are a rough trail over the natural and rugged New England rocky shoreline. In spots just a couple of feet from the path are abrupt drops of over 70 feet. Wild bushes and weeds often hide this danger. One of the main things to watch for is Poison Ivy which grows well in rainy summer weather along some areas of the path. Nevertheless, the walk remains one of the top attractions in Newport and is taken by people of all ages.
